Missing Out On An Element Of The Uniform Will Invite A Fine

Mixing up pom-poms and wearing unpolished boots are not the only factors that can force the cheerleaders to pay out a bulk of the money from their banks. Aside from these two, the ladies can’t afford to miss out on any element of their outfits.

In case a cheerleader doesn’t remember to carry one essential item with them, a fine will be imposed on them. It’s a fact that cheerleaders have to keep a lot of things in mind at the same time. Hence, it’s pretty normal to miss out on something. It’s not easy to be a cheerleader at all.

They Have To Be Present At Unpaid Events

Generally speaking, the cheerleaders don’t get a sufficient amount to maintain a proper lifestyle. They have to work hard, but the pay is extremely low. Cheerleaders make the least money than any individual present inside the stadium during an NFL game, including the vendors who sell hot dogs. Beat that!

It might take you by surrpise to know, that cheerleaders might also be present at unpaid events. If they deny appearing, strict actions are taken against them by the authorities. That’s the poor state of these pretty girls who work hard day and night.

They  Follow A Strict Dress Code

It comes as no surprise that NFL teams would control the wardrobe of the cheerleaders, at least what they wear to the field. In some cases, the dress code extends beyond the field too.

Even when the cheerleaders are off duty, they cannot wear sweatpants. The teams list out a wide variety of sartorial items that they may wear and may not wear. If teams have control of what they wear, we bet they have control of what cheerleaders talk about as well. Beyond discussing games and related topics, the cheerleaders must not discuss controversial topics, including strong opinions, politics, and religion.

For example, even if they want to click some snaps to post on social media, they can’t. Posting photos in uniform is strictly prohibited. Putting in investments of thousands into their final appearance, they don’t even have the authority to show that off.   

No Campaigning Or Gossiping

Everyone knows by now that cheerleaders need to follow a strict protocol. They don’t have permission to do a host of things. The rules are pretty much difficult to follow, and any violation will invite punishment and directly impact their earnings.

This stipulation seems to be fine as nobody would want the cheer girls to jumping, kicking, yelling, or chanting while chewing gum. However, this rule is more about controlling as the handbook states that that the director has the authority to control when the women are supposed to eat or drink. Cheerleading is all about poor savings and no freedom.

Cheerleaders Have to Abide By A Certain Diet

Maintaining a figure as per the NFL guidelines is not easy. A huge amount of dedication, hard work, and self-control is necessary. They have to attain that 'ideal weight.' A particular National, Football League handbook, stated that cheerleaders could have two meals throughout a day. Therefore, they had to choose as per their wisdom.

According to the diet plan, the girls can have only a slice of meat in a day. Since the expectations are rather high, many of these cheerleaders lived on caffeine as well as supplements. They simply can’t afford a weight gain. Such is the pressure.

They Can’t Have An Opinion In A Photoshoot

Cheerleaders who share a good rapport with the team have the advantage of being snapped for the team calendar. This privilege isn't as beneficial as you might think. They devote their 100 percent to the job, knowing this harsh truth quite well. They realize that they are replaceable any day, any time. And they understand that they would have nothing to say. Must Remove Make-Up Before Going To Sleep

You might have often heard the dermatologists recommending makeup to be washed off before women hit the bed. It is beneficial for the skin as it makes sure it doesn’t have breakouts and stays healthy. Rather than giving this advice to the cheerleaders, the National Football League sides have somehow made this mandatory.

A lot of handbooks have stated that cheerleaders must remove their makeup before they go to sleep. This has certainly made the environment much more invasive for the ladies. Whenever a piece of advice becomes an order, it is hard for people to work freely. It’s really sad.

Natural Skin Tan Is A Must

Everyone knows that the rules laid down by the teams for their respective cheerleaders are ridiculous. Women have to maintain their bodies as per the National Football League mandate. The mandate also states that cheerleaders must have tanned skin.

In case they don’t have it. Naturally, they have to visit a tanning salon in between their schedule. Additionally, they have to maintain the tan. If they fail to do so, they will have to face the consequences. They need to spend from their banks but never get a reimbursement. However, this cannot be a fake tan, instead, it should be a natural one! 

White Teeth A Must

Thorough checking is done from top to bottom, especially before their appearance for a game or any other National Football League event. Among all the stipulations that the cheerleaders must follow, they must have white teeth. If they aren’t healthy and properly white, the team will ask them to have their teeth whitened.

This is one more expense that the cheerleaders need to pay for, and unfortunately, the team doesn’t reimburse any bit of it. In case they fail to have or, in that case, fail to maintain glowing teeth, suspension follows. This has a clear mention in the handbooks.

Cannot Wear Uniform Outside The Stadium

Cheerleaders have to abide by some strict guidelines, including their uniforms and diet. They have to pay from their bank account for their uniforms. Irrespective of this, the National Football League has the final say regarding when they can wear them and when they can’t. A few handbooks stress not allowing the cheerleaders to wear their uniforms outside the stadium.

Despite that, the cheerleaders must hide their piercings and tattoos. They might lose their job unless they remove their piercings and apply makeup on their tattoos. They have to arrive at the stadium much early on a game day as they need to get their bodies checked. All this would have made sense if their earnings would have been considerable.

There Is No Room For Disagreement

The boss is always right. In the National Football League, the cheerleaders have to follow whatever the higher authorities have instructed them religiously. Anything that comes from the top is the law. There is no scope of a disagreement, even though several demands are bizarre and ridiculous.

Women here can’t speak out against any harassment and ill-treatment. They will lose their job if they do. The cheerleaders don’t have the permission to voice their opinions or disobey the authorities. So you thought they enjoy a flawless and lucrative career? Things seem to be a lot different from the outside.

They Need To Arrive Five Hours Before The Game Starts

This is something that requires a great deal of commitment. Not only the players on the field, the cheerleaders, too, have an equally long day. That is not something you can deny. They can’t sit down, neither is there any chance of a substitution.

They are active throughout the entirety of a game which can go on for three hours. Sometimes, games can extend. Carolina Panthers have asked its cheerleaders to arrive at the stadium five hours before kick-off. This can get tedious, but none spares a thought about them. Working for such a long time can take a toll on their health.

No Affiliation With The Team

The teams in the National Football League tend to focus a lot on how people see them. Cheerleaders of a team should behave according to their protocol. Some teams refuse to recognize the fact that these ladies are affiliated with them.

The management of these teams is apprehensive that any misconduct on the cheerleaders’ behalf might put them in a bad light. One such example is the NFL outfit, San Francisco 49ers. Practicing religiously, maintaining a proper food habit, staying away from any craving, adjusting to the low payments, not getting an opportunity to speak out, etc., have become part and parcel of a cheerleader’s life.

Aside from working hard round the clock, these ladies have to follow a strict workout regime to put on the best appearance in a game. For gym memberships, they have to pay from their own pockets.

Adjust With The Low Wages

The cheerleaders spend seven to eight hours at work. They have to adhere to a set of restrictions and are forbidden to complain. The teams pay these ladies very poorly and often penalize them for simple mistakes.

Moreover, they must pay for a lot of expenses from their own pockets. A reimbursement on behalf of the team management is way out of the question. Therefore, it’s pretty normal for these cheerleaders to expect impressive pay. Unfortunately, they don’t even get that. They hardly ask for a raise and have to stay content with abysmally low earnings.  

Must Shave In A Certain Way

There is no end to how invasive team management can become. They tend to control a major part of the cheerleaders’ lifestyle. Believe it or not, they even poke their nose into how a cheerleader must shave. It’s always favorable for a woman to shave that works for them and their bodies. How can one dictate how to do it?

Surprisingly, the teams do. Many don’t take this in good taste. This is not okay for them, but they can’t afford to complain as they will lose their job. This seems to be disgraceful, and hopefully, such situations will improve.

Their Uniforms Aren't Free

While we love to watch cheerleaders celebrating and encouraging their team with a fun dance, there's more to it than meets the eye. Most of us are unaware of the hard work that goes behind their enigmatic show. Also, the rules they have to put up, some of them are bizarre.

You'll be Fined

Cheerleading is more of a side thing you do, not a real job. While the profession may seem very glamorous and rewarding and they perform it flawlessly. But they are paid peanuts for the excellent show they put up. Sometimes they aren't paid at all.

Even if the girls want to pursue another job, they cannot do so as they have to attend rehearsals, every one of them. If they miss one rehearsal, they need to pay a fine. And if they manage to miss a couple of them, they even get fired. They aren't even paid for these rehearsals, and it can be incredibly frustrating for the girls.

You can't Sit No Matter How Tired You Are

When the football players are notching up their A-game, the cheerleaders encourage the players from the sidelines. However, the cheerleaders have to stand the entire time the game is on. They are not allowed to sit.

They have to stand through the entire duration of the game, and anyone who watched the NFL, will know, it lasts a long time, and cheerleaders can only sit if any official asks them to. Otherwise, they have to keep dancing and cheering the players. We think that's unfair! They deserve to take rests in between.

They Must Sit in a Ladylike Manner

When cheerleaders sit, they should be careful and sit on their toes. Instead, there is a handbook that insists that cheerleaders should sit in a ladylike manner. We think they should maintain things like they should maintain their posture and cross their legs.

But an NFL team should not be as strict as a parent and tell the cheerleaders to behave in a particular way. They also deserve to rest and relax without maintaining decorum! After the hard work they do and spend the time cheering the players on, imagine not getting to sit with ease.

Colour Me Not!

If low pay was a concern and lack of benefits, cheerleaders also don't have freedom in terms of their physical appearance. In a lawsuit against Buffalo Bills, it was revealed that cheerleaders must maintain single hair color.

This proved that women should not wear any unnatural color on their hair. They also can't try the new trendy hair coloring styles such as the ombre style. If they want to put on some simple highlights, cheerleaders must have their senior's approval. It is a strange policy, but cheerleaders have to abide by it.

Dull Hair, A Problem!

While the NFL does not want cheerleaders to sport some colors, it also has specific rules for especially maintaining the hair quality. If a cheerleader’s hair turns out to be too dull then, they need to sit on the bench.

To ensure that their crowning glory remains glamorous, cheerleaders also have to visit salons to keep their hair shiny and gorgeous. And for the upkeep of their hair, they spend money from the pocket. However, they still may fall short of the high standards set by NFL.

Drastic Physical Appearance Changes? No Questions!

When women are working as cheerleaders at the NFL, they're are instructed not to make any drastic changes to their appearance without seeking their boss's approval. This includes things like dying their hair or even piercing their body parts. That's not all. They need to be careful about including smaller changes.

There are instances that NFL cheerleaders should not even cut their hair without seeking permission from their boss. They are not even allowed to develop new skin conditions. Even if it is not any fault of theirs, they may risk losing their job.

Mind Your Fork and Your Utensils

The NFL not only has a say on the cheerleaders' hair color use, but they also have strict guidelines as to how the cheerleader should eat. One weird rule that NFL has for cheerleaders is they should always use utensils when they're eating something.

Cheerleaders cannot eat with their fingers, even if one needs their fingers to eat a particular type of food. So, foods that you need to eat with fingers, such as chicken strips and burgers, are not part of cheerleaders' food menu, which is a pity!

Make Touch-Ups in Public are a Strict No-No!

Cheerleaders always have this flawless unattainable beauty.  Some NFL teams have guidelines for cheerleaders' makeup and physical appearance too. The girls shouldn't fix their make-up in public.

As fixing it would mean admitting to the common public that they are not perfect, we wonder if the NFL knows that no one is perfect, and the girls may forget the rules and fix their make-up before others. To ensure the cheerleaders abide by this rule, they check their social media regularly to see they do not post anything inappropriate on social media. Many cheerleaders have lost their posts for posting something that the NFL did not like.

The Buffalo Bills have a cheerleading handbook that states all the details. This includes everything about a cheerleader's hair, such as the curls they should wear, and ringlets completely ruled out from their hairstyle handbook. That's pretty unfair too. Now it isn't always possible to sport your hair in a particular fashion—another weird rule to follow.

When Looking Like a Celebrity is a Priority

Looking glamorous is one thing, but exactly how glamorous? Well, maybe like a celebrity. That's what most teams do. They set guidelines for cheerleaders and ask them to look like celebrities.

In some cases, cheerleaders have to undergo extreme transformations, including what kind of hair extensions they should put on, also what type of makeup they should wear. If they have to change their looks, they have to pay for the kind of makeovers they would want for themselves, even if they wish to drastic changes to pay for it.

Perfect Nails? You Must Have Them!

NFL teams have a strict rein on a cheerleader's appearance, and it goes down to the last details, even their nails. Many teams even ask their cheerleaders to get their nails done professionally. Well, if they have to keep their nails perfect, they have to pay for it.

Imagine maintaining your nails and going to a professional salon to maintain them, especially if you keep going to the salon. Getting your nails done shouldn't be made mandatory as fans hardly get a chance to look at their nails, and they have to pay a lot to maintain their nails, which may be an unnecessary burden for them.

Cheerleaders Must Talk But on Certain Things Only

Cheerleaders should talk and interact with their fans, whether it is fans or other officials on the field. However, they have to choose their topics for conversations carefully. Cheerleading handbooks also include topics on what they should converse about.

According to these handbooks, cheerleaders cannot converse on the weather, as talking about the weather seems desperate. They also can't choose to talk about themselves or talk about things deemed inappropriate. They can't talk about themselves either. We are wondering what they can talk about.

They also Have to Sell Calendars While the Game is On!

It is not enough for cheerleaders to strut their stuff. They also have to pose for the calendars working for a specific NFL team. They also may be part of a photoshoot where girls have to flaunt their glamorous themselves. Cheerleaders must also sell a certain amount of calendars while the games are going on.

Some teams even demand cheerleaders to sell as many as 20 calendars a day. Others may ask the girls to sell 50 per quarter of the game. This demand may seem rather strange. And if that was not enough, the cheerleaders might even have to pay a fine if they fail to sell off a certain percentage of the magazines. Sometimes the money may be deducted from their paychecks.

Limited Water Breaks for Them

Whether it is for Buffalo Bills or Carolina Panthers, they set rather weird expectations from their cheerleaders. Their inhuman expectations include them either standing throughout the game or even limit their water breaks.

The cheerleaders belonging to the Panthers NFL team grant them water breaks only when they are on offense. The cheerleaders have to abide by these ridiculous rules or face the music. In such a case, we hope that the players are on offense to get more breaks, well, at least a water break. They deserve it.

 Two-Piece for Tuesdays

Cheerleaders have to don different types of uniforms. In some cases, they even are rather revealing. Girls don't mind wearing such ensembles to the games. The Oakland Raiderettes expect their cheerleaders to wear two-piece outfits on Tuesdays, especially for the practices.

The 2012 handbook had something rather odd. Tuesdays were meant for making them wear a risque garment and bare their midriffs. On top of that, if they did not wear the two-piece outfit, they would be fined $10. Cheerleaders may not like to wear such outfits, but sadly they have no choice.

They Must be Hygiene Conscious

If all of the other rules did not seem absurd, cheerleaders should also maintain their personal hygiene. Everyone must have a certain idea about maintaining their hygiene, especially when they are mingling with other people. However, cheerleading handbooks list out specific tenets to maintain personal hygiene.

The Buffalo Bills' handbook demands of the cheerleaders demand their women to change their feminine hygiene products every few hours, four hours to be exact. There are other extremely personal and incredible demands that these teams have of them. Isn't it ridiculous?

Stay Bacteria-Free, Avoid Loofas or Sponges

While cheerleaders' handbooks address strange personal demands, there are certain hygiene concerns that teams throw up, and cheerleaders have to follow them to the T., and the rule can make you gasp with sheer disbelief. It allows the teams to have greater control over their cheerleaders.

Some teams assert that the cheerleaders shouldn't use loofas or sponges because they may spread bacterial contamination. Well, whether they should use a loofah or not must be a decision left to the cheerleaders. It is not an employer's concern. Can you imagine your boss dictating you to use a loofah or sponge to clean yourself?

They Can Only Use Approved Products

If you thought the hygiene rules were strange and awkward, wait till you hear about this. Some NFL teams, such as the Buffalo Bills, dictate what products the cheerleaders could use. The Bills’ handbook insists on certain kinds of appropriate products for women to use.

This is especially true when cleaning up their private parts. Cheerleaders cannot use things that are full of chemical additives. If you think that this rule or mandate sounds obnoxious, well, you are not alone. We hope they do not have to pay a hefty fine for breaking this rule!

Undergarments Are Off the List too!

On game days, the cheerleaders cannot wear undergarments under their cheerleader outfits. This strange demand is because their garments may show up while performing, which isn't feasible. To ensure that cheerleaders follow this rule, some teams ask the girls to comply with the rule even during practices.

It is one of those strange and weird rules that cheerleaders have to follow. We don't think that the cheerleaders are exactly comfortable with the idea of performing without their undergarments. But they haven't got an option, do they?

All Perked Up

While cheerleaders are asked to come to the games without their undergarments, they may be granted an exception. If a cheerleader's breasts are not looking their usual perky selves, they must use a push-up bra to perk them up, so they don't look slouchy by any standards.

Of course, the bra must be seamless, so it is not visible from under the cheerleader's outfit. Slouchy breasts may even make them cheerleaders sit out for a game or maybe even for the entire season. Now isn't it rather asking for too much? We wonder how they endure such demands.

They Must Be an Epitome of Positivity

We have heard of two-piece Tuesdays. Now the Raiderettes have insisted on another strange rule. Girls must always look cheerful and positive. The facial expressions thing is clubbed together with all the other rules, including correct language usage and avoidance of crass language.

The cheerleaders must look happy and energetic all the time, at least through the entire duration of the game. The other NFL teams agree to this demand. Yes, the Buffalo Bills hold a similar rulebook. Even if you feel grumpy, you have to put on the best smiley face forward.

They Cannot Attend Parties with Players

A lawsuit, filed against the Raiderettes proved the obnoxious way that NFL teams treat their cheerleaders. It came to be known from the lawsuit that cheerleaders should not attend player parties.

Although the cheerleaders can interact or work with their players several times per week, they cannot attend parties. The rule even insists that certain players may behave appropriately at the parties, which may tarnish the cheerleaders' reputation. So, the cheerleaders rather not attend the parties at all.

 They Can’t Mingle With The Players

Cheerleaders should refrain from attending parties with players, but some teams may further extend the rules. So, the cheerleaders and players should not party or socialize together!

We think this is one of those strange rules that the cheerleaders have to follow. What if a cheerleader and a player happen to dine together co-incidentally? The cheerleader must then get up and leave.  The same rules apply to the players too.

They Can’t Follow Players on Social Media

Well, the etiquette rule book for the cheerleaders seems to be never-ending. Most teams expect the cheerleaders to stay as far from the players as possible, both physically and virtually. By that, we mean social media.

If a player follows a cheerleader on social media, the cheerleader may face the consequences. In such cases, the cheerleaders may even face a fine or run the risk of getting fired. Strange, the player goes Scott-free while the cheerleader has to bear the brunt. Talk of injustice meted out to the cheerleaders.

Stay Away From Married Players

Most handbooks expect the cheerleaders to stay away from the players as much as possible. And this is all the more so if the player is in a marital relationship. That means they cannot forge a relationship with a married player. The Raider handbook even points that in some cases, the players may lie about their marital status.

In such cases, the girls should call the NFL office to enquire whether the player is married or not. It is the cheerleaders' responsibility to find out the truth about their marital status. Well, all the responsibilities seem to be on the slender shoulders of the cheerleaders.
